Is it possible to see events and objects with your eyes that God will actually speak through to you? Yes, this is possible.
However, we can also very easily read into things that are not signs from God at all. So in each of these six visible signs I will be talking about in this article, we should not be quick to assume each one is always happening when we see them.
In other words, God can speak through these visible events and objects, but he’s not always saying something through these things when you see them. We need the Holy Spirit’s discernment and biblical application to really confirm God is speaking.
With that said, here are six visible signs God is speaking to you.
1. Unexplainable Timing
One of the qualities of God is his sovereignty over timing. There are certain events that shape the course of our lives that had to happen at the exact right moment.
For example, think of all the marriages in the Bible where a man and woman met each other at the exact right time for God’s will to then take place between them. When Jacob was fleeing from Esau, he went to find his uncle, Laban. Genesis 29:4-9 explains:
Jacob said to them, ‘My brothers, where do you come from?” They said, “We are from Haran.’ He said to them, ‘Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?’ They said, ‘We know him.’ He said to them, ‘Is it well with him?’ They said, ‘It is well; and see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep!’ . . . While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess.”
From this perfectly timed encounter, this led to the twelve tribes of Israel being born. Looking back, the perfectly timed meeting of Rachel and Jacob was clearly a sign God was speaking to them and directing their paths.
Likewise, you won’t always realize it in the moment, but when seemingly “random” things happen that end up resulting in important outcomes, you will know God was in it.
2. Biblical Symptoms in Your Body
I’ve talked about physical signs in your body that mean God is saying something to you in this article here: 6 Physical Signs God Is Speaking to You. I encourage you to read that article for more information on this point.
In short, according to Scripture, things like sleeplessness (Psalm 127:2), a lack of hunger (Matthew 9:15), physical symptoms of anxiety and depression (Matthew 11:28-30, Psalm 32:1-5), a sickness (James 5:17, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10), and sexual desires (1 Corinthians 7:9) can be used by God to tell us something important.
3. Printed Words that Answer Your Question to God
While the Bible is the ultimate written authority, God often speaks through other forms of printed words as well.
Perhaps you have been praying about particular problem, and then you read a non-fiction book on that topic, and God perfectly provides an answer to your prayer. Or maybe you’ve been asking God if you should move to a certain city, and then all of sudden you see your dream promotion listed on your company’s website offering to move you to that exact place. Or perhaps you’ve been thinking about someone you really like and then they text you words of confirmation that they like you too.
Of course seeing these types of printed words could just be a coincidence. So you really need more confirmation before making a huge life-decision (Proverbs 3:5-6). But when the timing and clarity these types of words bring are exactly what you were asking God for, it’s very likely God did speak to you through them.
4. Nature that Speaks to Your Heart
Psalm 19:1-2 (NIV) teaches us, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.” Romans 1:20 says, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.”
God is always speaking through his creation!
5. A Messenger
We can’t physically see Jesus right now because he is in heaven at the Father’s right hand (Hebrews 1:3). However, when he left this earth, he also sent his Spirit, which now lives in all true Christians (John 15:26, Ephesians 1:13).
Therefore, while we must never submit to the words of man like we do to the Scriptures, it is true that God does choose to help us through the counsel or other Christians through whom the Spirit works.
As Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
6. An Open Bible
It’s impossible to say that God is silent if you simply open your Bible. God has left a physical book with his eternal words to us. We can pick it up and read it whenever we need to hear a fresh word from God himself!
2 Peter 1:20-21 (NIV), “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
