A desire for marriage is good. God made marriage and he is often the one who puts the desire for marriage on the hearts of Christian singles.
And yet, as we all know, this desire for a human relationship can often tempt us away from our most important relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ.
So perhaps you are ready to be more active in your search for a Christian spouse in 2019. Perhaps you sense God telling you to do something different this year than years past so you can get different results. Well if that’s you, make sure you read to the end of this article because I have an exciting resource that many of you have been asking for and it’s finally ready.
But at this point I first want to give you 3 ways that you can keep Jesus first in your heart as you begin to actively pursue a Christian relationship in 2019.
Keep Jesus First By Pursuing a Christian Relationship for the Glory of God
One of the biggest mistakes we make as Christians when we talk about “putting God first” is that we often put all of our life into little boxes. God goes in one box. Our careers go in another box. Our education goes in another box. Our friends and family go into their respected boxes. And so on.
To put God first, we then order all of our boxes with our “God box” number one. And then we maybe put family, friends, our search for a spouse, career, education, and so on in order of importance to us. But that’s not what it really means to put God first.
God doesn’t want to be in a box. Even if it is your most important box. Rather, God wants to be first in all of the boxes you have in your life. He wants you to put him first in your relationships. He wants to be first in your career. He wants to be first in your finances.
In other words, to put God first means you do everything for his glory. The way you work, the way you socialize, the way you save money – all of it should be for God’s glory. So rather than putting God first and then putting your search for a Christian spouse second, to truly put him first you must proactively search for a Christian spouse for God’s glory.
Date for the glory of God. Pursue marriage for the glory of God. Do everything with a motive to please God. That’s how you can put God first as you pursue a Christian relationship this year. God made marriage and the relationship between a husband and wife is very glorifying to God. If you pursue marriage with a motive to honor him, you will be putting Jesus first in your life.
Take Active Steps of Faith But Depend on God for the Results in Your Search for a Godly Spouse
Another big mistake we often make as Christians is to assume “faith in God” means “let God do everything for you as you just watch him move.” This is usually not what God wants. The normal pattern in Scripture is that our faith in God will cause us to overcome fear and take action steps in our life to accomplish the will God has for us.
The other error, however, that is easy to make is to then assume that the blessings we receive in life are because of our own work ethic. This too is not right. While God usually requires us to take practical steps of faith to receive the blessings he wants to give, the Bible is also clear that the blessings we receive in life are still ultimately because of God’s grace and not our works. For as James 1:17 explains, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
Yes, humans are called to work for the things they receive on earth, but God is the one who ultimately produces the results. This is seen most clearly when it comes not to our earthly possessions but to our character development. As Proverbs 19:14 explains, “House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.”
So you can keep Jesus first in your search for a godly spouse by remembering that although you must take active steps of faith to receive his relationship blessings in your life, ultimately he deserves all the credit for transforming a man and woman into a godly husband and wife together.
No Matter What Happens This Year, Keep Jesus as Your Ultimate Treasure and Source of Joy
I’m a big believer in be proactive in your search for a Christian spouse as long as your motives for marriage are pure and your biblically mature enough to handle a Christian marriage. However, I also believe the Bible is so clear that nothing will truly satisfy our hearts except a deep, profoundly rich relationship with Jesus Christ.
So one way you must keep Jesus first as you actively pursue a Christian relationship this year is to remember that Jesus, not a human relationship is the true source of joy. A relationship with a man or woman can be “a” blessing from God. But Jesus Christ himself is “the” ultimate blessing from God. As our Lord said in Matthew 6:19-21:
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
