Here’s a recent email I received from an AGW University alum:

1. God Prepares You for a Spirit-Filled Relationship By First Helping You Understand What a Spirit-Filled Relationship Actually Is

You might think you are aiming the arrow at the center of the target, but if you flinch when you release the arrow, if your eyesight is flawed, or if a gust of wind was not factored into your aim, you will miss. The point is, if we want to hit our target, we must make sure our aim is perfect.

Thus, if you want a Spirit-filled relationship one day, you must first know exactly what this is so you can aim at the right target. Many people think they are entering a Spirit-filled relationship because the other person prays with them, goes to church, or is accepting of Christian beliefs. But these are not the qualities of a true Spirit-filled relationship.

When I use the phrase “a Spirit-filled relationship,” I’m talking about a romantic relationship that comprises of two people who are both filled with the Spirit individually (Ephesians 5:18, Galatians 5:16, 25) and who then continue to walk in the Spirit together (Philippians 1:1-2, 2 Timothy 2:22).

2. God Prepares You for a Spirit-Filled Relationship By Giving You the Deep Conviction to Only Partner with Someone Who Is Equally Yoked with You

Biblically, there is a difference between being baptized in the Spirit and being filled with the Spirit.

All Christians are baptized in the Spirit at the moment of their conversions (Ephesians 1:13-14, 1 Corinthians 12:12-13). If you are truly saved, the Holy Spirit will never leave you (Romans 8:38-39, Hebrews 13:5).

However, throughout the course of our life, Christians can be more or less filled with the Holy Spirit’s power based upon our willingness to actively follow the Spirit. If I am sinning, this hurts my fellowship with the Spirit and thus I’m less filled with his active presence and power (Ephesians 4:30, 1 Thessalonians 5:19). When I keep in step with the Spirit, I am more filled with his power (Galatians 5:25, Acts 13:15). When I do or don’t spend time in prayer and in the Scriptures, this directly affects how much I’m filled with the Spirit.

Thus, when we apply these truths to this idea of having a Spirit-filled relationship, the first step is to only be in a relationship with another true Christian. To be filled with the Spirit, you must first receive the Spirit through putting your faith in Jesus. A believer can then be more or less filled with the Holy Spirit based upon if they are obeying or disobeying the Lord’s leading. An unbeliever, however, cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit at all since they don’t have the Holy Spirit to begin with (Romans 8:6-8).

3. God Prepares You for a Spirit-Filled Relationship By Teaching You the Point of a Romantic Relationship

To be filled with the Spirit, you must keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). This means we must do what the Spirit leads us to do. So what is the Spirit leading you to do?

That question must first be answered generally and then it must be answered specifically. Generally speaking, the Bible teaches that all Christians who have the Spirit will be led to exalt the Father through Jesus Christ (John 14:16, John 15:5-8, John 16:14, John 17:1, Matthew 6:9). In everything we do, our purpose is to honor God through Jesus (Colossians 3:19, 1 Corinthians 10:31). This is what the Holy Spirit will lead every Christian to always do. However, throughout each of our individual lives, the way in which the Holy Spirit will empower and lead us to glorify God through Jesus will be varied (1 Peter 4:10-11).

These truths apply to relationships. The point of romantic relationships is to glorify God (Ephesians 5:21-33). And in each individual relationship, the specific actions and paths walked will be unique to that couple; but God will intend for them to be used for his glory.

4. To Prepare You for a Spirit-Filled Relationship, God Will Teach You the Process of Being Continually Filled with the Holy Spirit

Being baptized by the Spirit is a one-time act (1 Corinthians 12:13). Being filled with the Spirit is an ongoing process (2 Peter 1:5-9). Here are a few of the key biblical elements of being continually filled with the Spirit:

  • To be filled with the Spirit, you must regularly read and meditate on God’s word, allowing the Spirit to use it to direct you in your life (2 Corinthians 2:13, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:21).
  • To be filled with the Spirit, you must regularly pray so you can continually repent of sin and listen to the Lord’s leading (Ephesians 6:17-18, Jude 1:20, Romans 12:12, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, 1 John 1:9).
  • To be filled with the Spirit, you must regularly participate in a local church that preaches the word, administers the sacraments, and practices church discipline (Hebrews 10:24-25, Ephesians 3:10, 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Hebrews 13:17).

There’s more that could be said. But the point here is that to be in a Spirit-filled relationship, you must first know how to be a Spirit-filled individual and then partner with someone who is also regularly seeking to be filled.

5. To Prepare You for a Spirit-Filled Relationship, God Will Put It on Your Heart to Start Praying for This Type of Relationship

We do have a part to play in receiving the good things God wants to give us, including when it comes to a Spirit-filled relationship. However, I also firmly believe that this type of relationship is a miracle that can only be produced by God himself. Thus, without him giving you this relationship, it won’t happen.

A Spirit-filled relationship pleases the Lord, the Lord loves for us to pray for things that please him (Matthew 7:7-11), thus he will lead you to pray for this when he’s preparing to give it to you.
