1. If You Both Are Being Sanctified in the Ways You Need So You Are Ready to Be an Ephesians 5 Couple, This Is a Great Sign God Is Putting You Through the Pairing Process
Justification is when we are instantly given the perfections of Christ through God’s grace. Sanctification, however, is the process by which God teaches us to leave our flesh behind and walk in the new nature we have in Jesus (See Romans 6 for more on this).
These are important biblical words for all Christians, but justification and sanctification are also really important for those of you who want to glorify the Lord in marriage one day. You have to first be justified and know that you are God’s dearly loved child who has been made new in Christ. But then you have to mature to such a degree where you can live out those gifts as you operate in the covenant bond of marriage.
Ephesians 5:22-33 explains what God wants for the husband and wife. In a way, this passage gives us an impossible standard that none of us can fulfill perfectly. Husbands are called to sacrifice and love their wives as Christ does for the church. And wives are called to respect and submit to their husbands as the church does to Christ. No human can do this. So we need to be given the perfections of Christ. But then we need to mature so we can walk in these perfections which will enable us to function as a husband or wife.
Thus, if you and your future spouse are going through this process, God is also putting you both through the pairing process. Sanctification is a never-ending journey in this life. You don’t need to be perfect or marry a perfect person. Rather, you need to find the person who wants to keep being sanctified with you.
2. If You Are Both Removing What Needs to Be Removed to Make Room for Your Future Spouse, This Is a Great Sign You Two Are Being Paired Together
There’s nothing wrong with not having the time, energy, or desire to prioritize another person above other important relationships. However, this does mean you are not prepared for marriage.
While husbands and wives should still love their parents, serve at church, and have healthy friendships, their spouse should be their top priority when it comes to human relationships.
This prioritization takes time to fully create. If you are spending more and more time with someone and allowing other things to fade so you can make room for this new romance, this is a good sign God is putting you both through the pairing process (Genesis 2:24).
3. If You’re Emotional Connection Is Increasing Your Sexual Passion, This Is a Good Sign God Is Putting You Through the Pairing Process with Someone
Sex is good. God made it. He wants his children to be sexually attracted to their future spouses. However, as we all know, sexual passion is easy to turn into a sinful passion. One sign that your sexuality is being used correctly is if it is appropriately connected to your emotions.
When you’re getting to know your future spouse, you should be more and more sexually attracted to them the more you connect emotionally. This is why you should be headed towards marriage. When the couple has gotten so close emotionally, their bodies will be craving each other in a very strong way. This is good, so long as you proceed into marriage and don’t fall into sexual sin (1 Corinthians 7:36).
