4 Marks of a Man Sent By God to Help You Grow

Colossians 3:16

A man sent by God to help you grow will not be perfect, but he will reflect qualities that draw you closer to Christ, not away from him. Here are four marks that reveal a man God is using to help you become the woman he’s called you to be.

And on a quick sidenote, if you are a Christian single person of any age who wants to thrive in a godly marriage one day, I created AGW University for you. While quick tips can be very helpful, I created AGW University for those of you who want a deep Bible study about relationships.

The courses build on each other and were specifically designed for Christians who are single but who also want to use this season of their life to prepare for their future marriage. For example, one of the courses is called Marriage Material: The Qualities to Develop in Yourself and Look for in Another if You Desire a Healthy Christian Marriage One Day.

1. A Man Sent By God to Help You Grow Will Be Marked By Pointing You Back to God, Not to Himself

A man sent by the Lord will never try to replace God in your life. Instead, he’ll remind you that your ultimate fulfillment and identity are found in Christ alone.

John the Baptist modeled this character perfectly when he said, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).

A God-sent man has the same mindset. He doesn’t crave to be the center of your world. He wants the best for you, which is Christ. In contrast, a man led by pride or insecurity will want to be your source of peace. While a good man is a blessing to a woman, a godly man knows Jesus alone is what we all need most.

2. A Man Sent By God to Help You Grow Will Be Marked By Challenging You with Truth, Not Just Comfort

A man sent by God won’t flatter you just to stay on your good side. He’ll love you enough to say the hard things if that is what you need. Proverbs 27:6, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.”

Of course there will be a balance. A man should not feel the need to always offer advice or to hurtfully criticize you. And yet, he’ll lovingly speak the truth when it’s needed. Ephesians 4:15 says, “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”

If he’s from God, he’ll use truth as a tool to build you up, not break you down. Maybe he’ll encourage you to forgive someone, to stay faithful in your commitments, or to guard your heart in a friendship that has turned toxic.

The wrong kind of man will avoid truth because he’s afraid of conflict. But a man God sends isn’t motivated by fear; he’s motivated by love and obedience. Like iron sharpening iron (Proverbs 27:17), his presence will refine you, not just constantly flatter you.

3. A Man Sent By God to Help You Grow Will Help You See Your Purpose More Clearly

Romans 12:6 says, “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.”

A godly man helps you use the gifts God has given you. He’ll cheer you on in ministry, career, or service opportunities that align with God’s call on your life. Instead of holding you back, he’ll celebrate the way God works through you.

You might notice this in small ways as he encourages you to stay faithful in your church involvement, or as he prays over your dreams and decisions, or as he reminds you of past successes when you feel down.

When someone is truly sent by God, they make you stronger, not smaller. They remind you that you have something meaningful to contribute to the kingdom (1 Peter 4:10).

4. A Man Sent By God to Help You Grow Will Be Wanting You to Help Him Grow Too

You can’t help someone grow if you’re not growing yourself. A man sent by God will never act like he’s “arrived.” Instead, you’ll see humility, teachability, and a hunger for God’s word in him. He will want to be with a woman who can also help him as he helps her.

He wants to be with a woman with whom he can practice Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

And if you are someone who wants to glorify the Lord in marriage one day but also knows you have some spiritual growth to do before you are ready for a relationship, I created AGW University for you.
