Is your desire for that woman from yourself or is it actually coming from the Lord?
Here are five things you will see when a woman was sent to you by God.
And in many of my articles, you only need a few points to relate to you to understand what God is saying. However, in this situation, I believe you need all five points to relate to you if you really want to confirm if a woman was sent to you by God or not.
1. A Woman Was Sent to You By God if You Are Biblically Compatible
Whenever you want to know the will of God, you must always start with the word of God. If you ever feel like God is leading you to do something that would contradict the Scriptures, you can be certain that you are not actually hearing God. Whenever the Holy Spirit speaks to you personally, it will always align with what the Holy Spirit has already said to all of us in his word.
Therefore, to start, if you want to know if a woman was sent by God or not, you must confirm if you two are biblically compatible. What does it mean to be biblically compatible?
First, it means that you both believe in the Scriptures’ claims about Jesus. 1 Corinthians 7:39 states, “A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.” Here we can see the principle that Christians can only marry other Christians. And to be a Christian, you must believe Jesus is Lord.
Second, you must have enough agreement on important non-salvation issues that you can live at peace with each other spiritually. There are many important issues in the Bible that are not a matter of being saved or not. The Bible calls us to peace (Romans 12:18). So when choosing a wife, you must make sure you can live at peace with each other in the sense that you are theologically aligned enough to raise children together. Thus, if you can’t go to the same church or you have significant theological disagreements, she is not sent to you from the Lord.
2. A Woman Was Sent to You By God if You Are Personally Compatible
When you study what the Bible says about the call to singleness compared to the call to marriage, you will see that personal desires play a big factor. For example, when you read 1 Corinthians 7, Paul makes it very clear that he was happy to be single. And yet, he knew that not all would be happy to be single.
Thus, in 1 Corinthians 7:7, he states, “I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.” And then in 1 Corinthians 7:36 he says, “If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed, if his passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry—it is no sin.” Finally, in 1 Corinthians 7:40, he also adds, “Yet in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.”
Clearly, Paul is teaching us that a man and woman should only get married if they really want to get married. He’s talking about your desires, not just your biblical compatibility. You won’t want to be married to someone with whom you don’t fit personally. So, to really know if a woman is sent to you by God, you two should have personalities that fit together so your time together can be generally enjoyable.
3. A Woman Was Sent to You By God if You Are Romantically Compatible
Sometimes a man and woman can be great friends, but the romantic chemistry just isn’t there. However, when a woman is sent to you by God, you both will be sexually attracted to each other.
How attracted do you both need to be to each other? You need to be attracted enough to where you can both happily fulfill the biblical command to regularly have sex together in marriage. As 1 Corinthians 7:5 instructs, “Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”
4. A Woman Was Sent to You By God if You Are Practically Compatible
Sometimes a man and woman can be biblically, personally, and sexually compatible while also heading in two different directions in life. For example, if a woman wants to be a missionary in a third-world country but you want to raise a family and do ministry in your American hometown, you two are not meant for each other.
While a husband and wife will certainly need to compromise on some desires in life, when one person has to give up too much to be with the other, it creates resentment and unhappiness. When God sends a woman to you, you will have enough similar desires in life where it would make sense practically to get married (Ephesians 5:15-17).
5. A Woman Was Sent to You By God if You Are Ministry Compatible
A husband and wife are not just meant to be partners who serve each other. Rather, they are also called to serve others together. If, for some reason, you two are serving Christ less when you are together, that is a bad sign. Rather, when God sends you the right woman, you will be empowered to serve God more.
This doesn’t mean you have to have the same spiritual gifts and literally be in the same ministry together. But overall, you two should be a spiritual team that is advancing the kingdom of God together, both in how you raise your family and in how you serve your community (Genesis 2:18, 1 Peter 3:7).
