3 Signs God Is Telling You to Quit Your Job

2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

Here are 3 signs that God might be telling you to quit your job.

Before we get started, I want to clarify that while these signs may mean God wants you to quit, this video is not meant to give you advice on how and when to quit. Perhaps God is telling you to quit after you get another job offer. I encourage you to be responsible and walk with the Lord as you make these important life decisions. For as 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 states:

“For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.”

Working at a job you do not enjoy is sometimes God’s will. However, God does lead people to quit sometimes too. So here are 3 signs God is probably telling you to quit your job and work somewhere else.

  1. If It Is Sinful Work or Causing You to Turn From God, God Is Probably Telling You to Quit Your Job

I say probably because sometimes you don’t need to fully quit your job but you need to change something at your job to help you avoid temptation. Perhaps you need to be more honest or stop hanging around certain coworkers.

But when a job is repeatedly tempting you to sin many times the best option is to quit and work somewhere else. As 2 Timothy 2:22 states, “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

  1. If You Are Miserable Because This Job Does Not Utilize Your Gifts, This Is a Good Sign God Is Telling You to Quit and Work Elsewhere

Being unhappy at a job is a big topic because there are many possible sources to this unhappiness. Let’s say you are unhappy at your workplace because you are struggling to have a good work ethic or you don’t like authority – these are not good reasons to quit because these are issues with you rather than your workplace.

One reason people are often miserable at work, however, is because they are in a role that clashes with their personality type and gifts (1 Peter 4:10). It’s in these instances that I believe God will usually lead someone to quit and work in a role that better suits their personal strengths.

Now certainly we all need to work at jobs that are not a perfect fit when we just need to pay the bills and there is no other option at the moment. But if you stay in a role that forces you to do things God did not give you gifts to do, you will end up burning yourself out and really struggling in that workplace.

One classic example of this is when it comes to introverts and extroverts. If you are very extroverted you will struggle to function in a role where you must be alone in an office all day. And if you are an introvert you will wear out if you are forced to always be interacting with people all week.

So if you are miserable at work because you are poorly suited for the role you are in, this is probably a sign God is telling you to move on.

  1. If You Get a Better Job Opportunity, This Is Often a Sign God Is Telling You to Quit Your Current Job

As I said in the beginning of this article, as adults God expects us to be responsible. If we need to provide through a job that we do not enjoy, this is a noble task (Proverbs 14:23). However, one sign God is closing a door in your life is when a better door opens.

So if you are asking God if you should quit but there are no other opportunities right now and you need the money to survive, it is very unlikely God is telling you to quit right now. But if you really want to leave that job and then a door opens (1 Corinthians 16:8-9) for you to take a different position that you feel would better suit you, this is probably a sign from God that he does want you to quit.
