3 Signs God Is Closing a Door in Your Life

signs God is closing a door

Acts 16:7-8

What signs are there that God is closing a door in your life? How can you tell when God is closing and opening doors for you?

Here are 3 signs that God is closing a door in your life.

If You Get a Clear “No” in Life, God Is Closing that Door

Many times we will get rejected from a certain college, get rejected from a job we wanted, or get rejected by a person we wanted to date. But because we want those things so bad, we can still wonder if perhaps this is just a test of faith. Perhaps God will still open these doors if we just hold onto hope.

While God certainly can open any door that gets closed in life, it is unwise to ignore the clear answers life gives us. If you ask a girl out and she says no, you should receive that as God closing that door. Even if you do date one day, you must at least accept that God has closed that door right now. If your bid on the house does not go through and someone else buys the house, God has clearly closed that door.

Don’t ignore the clear signs life gives us. If you get a firm “No” in life, that is God closing that door.

If You Don’t Even Have the Choice to Walk Through the Door, God Has Closed that Door in Your Life

Many times we get confused on what God wants us to do when we have multiple options in life. If you have multiple job options, clearly it will take some discernment to know which door God wants you to walk through.

At other times in life, however, we wonder about things that are not even an option. In Acts 16:7-8 it states, “And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas.” Because they could not enter into Bithynia, they knew God was closing that door.

So if you are wondering if God is leading you to get married but you are not even dating someone right now, you should assume at this point in life God has closed that door. He may open it one day but your lack of options is clearly a sign that God has closed the marriage door for this season of your life.

If you are wondering if you should switch jobs but no matter how many resumes you send out no one is calling you back, but you know you can’t quit because you have bills to pay, it would be a wise assumption that God has closed any doors that would allow you to leave that job.

If you thought you and your ex were going to get back together but then your ex completely disappears, ignores your calls, and starts dating someone else, you should see that as a closed door. You don’t even have the option to walk through that door so you should let it go.

If God Opens a Better Door, This Is a Sign He Is Closing Other Doors

It is a clear sign that God is closing a door in your life if he has opened a much better door in your life.

For example, if you are wondering if God wants you to go back to your ex, but you know that relationship was not healthy, and then God brings a new person into your life that you have a very healthy relationship with that is much more honoring to God, this is a clear sign that God is closing the door to your ex.

If you are wondering if you should join a certain ministry but then a door opens to the exact type of ministry you’ve always wanted to be a part of, this is a sign that God is closing that door in your life.

If you are wondering if you should move in with a roommate you don’t know that well but then your best friend asks you to move in, the rent is cheaper, the house is nicer, and you really want to live with your best friend, God is showing you that he is closing one door through opening a much better door in your life.

As Psalm 23:6 states, “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” When a better path opens, you will know what doors God is closing.
