The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all equally God but they are also three different persons. One way this truth is expressed is through the different roles they play. The Father appoints what will happen, the Son accomplishes what the Father appoints to happen, and the Holy Spirit applies what Christ has accomplished.
These truths can also help us answer the question, “How will the Holy Spirit reveal the one to you?” By knowing what the Holy Spirit does in the Christian’s life generally, we can also see how he will help us know who to marry.
Also, this a big topic, so there is a lot I won’t be able to cover here. 1. The Holy Spirit Will Reveal The One to You By Convicting You of the Wrong Relationships and Bringing You Peace When You Are in the Right Relationship
When you become a Christian, the Holy Spirit doesn’t just come on you. Rather, the Holy Spirit actually comes to live within you (Ephesians 1:13-14, 1 Corinthians 6:19). This means that the Holy Spirit will speak to you through your convictions, which come from your own heart.
When something is off and you are going down a road the Father doesn’t want you on, the Holy Spirit will bring a loving conviction upon you (John 16:8). Additionally, when you are on the right road the Father does want you on, the Holy Spirit will give you a supernatural peace so you know you are in step with him (Romans 14:17, Galatians 5:22).
Thus, when you are walking down a relationship road with someone God does not want you with, the Holy Spirit will bring a loving conviction; likewise, when you’re on the right relationship road, the Holy Spirit will confirm this too you as well.
2. The Holy Spirit Will Reveal The One to You By Helping You Apply Scripture to Your Choice of a Spouse
The Holy Spirit always uses the Scriptures to guide his people. 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 explains:
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.”
Therefore, one way the Holy Spirit will reveal your future spouse to you is by illuminating your mind to understand the Scriptures and to then apply biblical wisdom rightly. You will read about the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 and then you will be given eyes to see those fruits in the person God wants you to marry. You will read about the roles of a husband and wife in Ephesians 5:22-33 and the Holy Spirit will help you discern if you and this person can operate in those roles together.
The Lord will use the Bible, through the illumination of the Spirit, to guide you to the right person he wants you with.
3. The Holy Spirit Will Reveal The One to You By Speaking Through Other Spirit-Filled Christians
The Holy Spirit doesn’t just dwell in you. He dwells in all true Christians. Thus, he will often speak to us through other believes:
- Galatians 6:1, “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.”
- 2 Samuel 12:1, “And the Lord sent Nathan to David . . .
- Acts 4:8, “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them . . .
- Mark 13:11, “And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.”
If you’re the only Christian who thinks you are making a good relationship choice, this is probably a red flag. Sure, sometimes you are right and the other Christians in your life are wrong. Normally, however, the Holy Spirit will confirm you have indeed met the one through the confirmation you are receiving through other believes.
4. The Holy Spirit Will Reveal The One to You By Speaking to You in Ways You Could Not Have Manufactured Yourself
When Abraham’s servant was sent to locate the woman God had chosen for Isaac, he saw Rebekah and Genesis 24:21 states, “The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not.”
When we really want to fool ourselves into thinking the Holy Spirit has said something to us, we can always find a way. So how will you know that the Holy Spirit has actually revealed your future spouse to you and you are not just fooling yourself?
I don’t know. But the Holy Spirit does! Yes, there are practical things that should help you know God’s will, like properly following the Scriptures and submitting to the wise counsel of other people. But marriage is a very personal decision. Thus, you should expect the Holy Spirit to speak to you in very personal ways about who to marry.
After the Lord revealed Rebekah as Isaac’s future wife in a very special way that only he could have manufactured, the servant knew without a shadow of a doubt that he had found the right woman. As he recounted the story, the servant said in Genesis 24:48, “Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son.”
Somehow, someway, the Holy Spirit will help you know you’ve truly met the one. You will know he has spoken to you in a way that you could never have manufactured yourself.
