4 Biblical Signs a Man Would Be Better Off Single Right Now

1 Corinthians 7:7

Here are four biblical signs a man would be better off single right now.

1. If You Know a Woman Would Distract You from the Important Work You Are Doing Right Now, the Bible Says You Should Be Single

Some men will be called to singleness forever. Other men will only be called to an intentional season of singleness. Either way, one sign that God wants a man single is when there is work to be done that will be better accomplished without a woman.

We must remember why God made a woman for the man in the first place. He made her to be his helper (Genesis 2:18). Therefore, if a woman is a hindrance rather than a help due to the specific calling on your life right now, that is a biblical sign that you are currently called to be single. For example:

  • Maybe you are a younger man, and you know you are in a season of extreme growth with the Lord.
  • Perhaps you are building a company or a ministry that is requiring massive amounts of time, energy, and focus.
  • Or maybe you have family responsibilities, such as caring for a sick mother or father.

Some men would actually be better equipped to go through seasons like this while in a healthy relationship with a Christian woman. Other men, however, would be too distracted with a relationship and neglect the current calling for this season.

Ministry effectiveness is the filter through which Paul instructs a man to choose either marriage or singleness. It really depends on how God wired you. As Paul said, “I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another” (1 Corinthians 7:7).

2. If You Know You Would Let a Woman Down Because You’re Not Who You Need to Be Yet, the Bible Says You Should Be Single Right Now

It’s irresponsible to take on responsibility that you know you’re not ready to handle. A true mark of maturity is knowing when you’re not mature enough to thrive in a particular situation, so you purposefully delay it until you are ready.

Many men, however, are far too hard on themselves. If you are a perfectionist, you will wait too long before feeling released to be in a relationship. You don’t have to be a millionaire, have your own branded ministry, or look like a fitness model to be ready for marriage.

Rather, you just need to be able to fulfill the basic requirements of pursuit, provision, protection, and spiritual leadership. You must be a real Christian following the Lord. You don’t have to pretend to be someone you’re not.

Big picture, if you know your character is lacking something that would cause you to hurt a woman if you got into a committed relationship with her, that is a good sign you should remain single right now.

Philippians 2:3-4, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

3. If You Know You Could Find a Woman to Date Even Though You Wouldn’t Want to Marry Her, the Bible Says You Should Be Single Right Now

Building off of what we learned in point 2, for a relationship to be biblically blessed, it must be mutually beneficial.

The reality is, many of you watching this could easily get a girlfriend if you really wanted one. However, deep down, you know that you would not marry that woman. You would only be looking for a girlfriend to use selfishly for the time being, rather than actually looking for a wife you could spend the rest of your life with.

Dating is not in the Bible. However, marriage certainly is. Therefore, the only way to use dating biblically is to pursue marriage. If you’re dating just to date and not to find a wife, you are hurting yourself, the women you are dating, and your future marriage.

It’s far better to spend time preparing for the woman God does have for you than to waste time with the women you know God doesn’t have for you. The more women you date that you know you won’t marry, the longer it will take for you to be ready for the woman you will marry one day.

When you are faithful to God in singleness, he will be moving you closer to marriage. Luke 16:10, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.

4. If You Know You Need More Training Through Service to Be a Biblical Husband, the Bible Says You Should Be Single Right Now

As a husband, you will be required to lead your wife. But remember what biblical leadership actually means. In Mark 10:42-45, Jesus said:

You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Before you can lead, you need to learn how to serve. If you aren’t serving anyone right now, you shouldn’t get married because you won’t know how to lead.

Once you have experienced serving, that’s often when the Lord calls you into a season where you are actively seeking to find a wife.
