1. God Will Protect You from Marrying the Wrong Person By Stopping the Relationship Before It Even Starts

When you are truly following God and seeking to honor him, God will not let you miss his will for your life. If you are disobeying God and running from him in sin, then it is possible to miss out on the good God wanted to give you. But when you are not running and you are submitting to God’s leading, he will direct your path and lead you where you need to go so you don’t miss his plan for your life as Proverbs 3:5-6 explains.

So when you are following God and you really like someone and you begin to wonder if this person is the one God has for you, but then the relationship never even starts, you can be sure that this was not God’s will for you and he is protecting your from marrying the wrong person.

2. God Will Protect You from Marrying the Wrong Person By Giving You Strength to Reject a Bad Relationship

One of the main reasons people get trapped in bad marriages is because they lacked the strength in dating to face the red flags and give this relationship up. Sometimes our hopes outweigh our willingness to face the facts.

But when we are submitting to God and not our own desires, God will empower us to reject things even when we really want to hang onto them. Relationships are rarely all bad or all good. Usually a bad relationship is hard to let go of because there is also some good in it or it was good at one point in the past. But God doesn’t want us to live a life that is kind of good. God wants us to fully follow him and receive his best for us. Isaiah 54:14, 17 states:

‘In righteousness you will be established: Tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. . . . no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,’ declares the Lord.”

When God gives you the strength to reject a relationship that is actually a weapon forged against you, this is a clear sign God is protecting you from marrying the wrong person.

3. God Will Protect You from Marrying the Wrong Person By Making Your Christian Beliefs an Issue for the Person You Are About to Marry

When you are in a serious relationship that is having problems, it can be very hard to know if this is a sign that you should break up or if this is a test that you both need to fight through so you can actually become closer because of it.

Christian couples shouldn’t instantly break up when things get hard. But there are issues that we as Christians cannot compromise on – mainly our Christian beliefs. One way God will protect you from marrying the wrong person will be by making your Christian beliefs an issue for this person before you get married. 2 Timothy 2:19 states:

Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and, ‘Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.’”

When you are unequally yoked, you will want to turn away from wickedness but the person you are with will not want to honor the Lord and confess the name of the Lord. God will literally cause divisions between you and this person regarding your faith in Jesus as a way of showing you this is not the person he wants you to marry. As Jesus said in John 15:18-19:

If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”

Those who are in the world and not of Christ will end up despising you for your allegiance to Jesus. We all will have issues in marriage because we are all sinners – no relationship is perfect – but when you are not married and you discover that the person you are dating has deep differences with you about your faith in Jesus, this is a sign God is protecting you from marrying this person.

Trust God no matter how hard it seems. When you reject the world’s lies about relationships and you follow God, in the end you will always receive far more than you ever gave up.
