Throughout the Bible we are taught that “you shall know them by their fruit” (Matthew 7:20). This is primarily referring to true Christians always showing some evidence of their salvation by repenting of sin and obeying God through the power of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-24).
Nonetheless, this principle can help us know what God is doing or not doing in other parts of our lives as well. Whenever God is truly putting two people together and they are not going outside of his will, this will be evident by the fruit God will produce in the life of this man and woman.
So here are 5 things God will produce in your life when you’ve met the person he wants you to marry one day.

1. When You Meet The One, God Will Produce a Healthy Partnership That Is Focused First on Serving Him
There are many blessings that God gives to his people through the covenant bond of marriage. God gives us companionship, sexual pleasure, and the financial blessing of having two people working together. But above every other blessing that comes along with marriage, the primary blessing is that you will have a ministry partner that you will be able to serve God with in a way that is better than if you remained single.
I’m not saying that everyone can serve God more effectively in marriage than they could in singleness. Rather, I’m pointing out the truth that God will only call someone to marriage rather than singleness if that person will be better equipped to serve God in marriage rather than singleness. If God wired you to serve him more effectively in singleness, this means he has called you to intentionally remain single.
But for most Christian, God has designed them to operate in the most effective way in the context of marriage. If you read through 1 Corinthians 7, for example, Paul is not saying that all people would be better off single or all would be better off married. Rather, in 1 Corinthians 7:7 he states, “I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.”
You either have the gift of singleness like Paul or you have the gift of marriage like many others. But either way, God has called us to use our gifts to bring him glory (1 Peter 4:10-11). So when God calls you to marry someone, this union will be used to create a powerful ministry partnership.
2. When You Meet The One, God Will Produce a Christian Unity Between You and This Person
As the church, all Christian are supposed to show a supernatural unity that will be a witness to the world that something is different about us (John 17:21). This unity is not only difficult to accomplish, it is actually impossible to accomplish unless the Holy Spirit is producing this unity in his people and they are submitting to the Spirit’s leading.
The same is true on an individual bases in a Christian marriage. The union between a Christian man and woman is supposed to be so harmonious that it becomes a witness for Christ to the watching world. This doesn’t mean that you and this person can never have any issues. But as Christians, God wants us to handle our issues differently than the world does.
When God reveals the one, there will be challenges along the way. But by his Spirit he will also produce a holy unity between you two that will bring him glory because you will be reflecting the love Christ and the church have.
As Ephesians 5:31-32 states, “‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.”
3. When You Meet The One, God Will Produce Blessings in Other People’s Lives Through This Relationship
We tend to think about dating relationships and marriage in a vacuum. Obviously the two people that a relationship affects the most are those two people in that relationship. But as Christians, our lives must never be lived in a vacuum. God has called us to let our love spill out into the world.
In other words, everything in our lives, including our relationships, must come under the two greatest commandments that sum up all the commandments in Scripture:
‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ And [Jesus] said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.’” (Matthew 22:36-40)
For a relationship to be biblical, it must be an expression of love not only between these two people in the relationship but also for God and other people in this world. Friends, family, church members, and future children will also be blessed when God is in a relationship.
4. When You Meet The One, God Will Produce an Abundance of Grace and Forgiveness For Each Other
Relationships are always messy. At some point, you two will always get tested. If this person is truly the person God wants you to marry, nothing will be able to divide you. When sins occur or troubles are present, God will supply you two with a supernatural grace and ability to forgive one another.
Certainly in dating you should not always stay together. Sometimes you must forgive someone but also send them on their way because they have shown themselves to be untrustworthy and unfit for marriage with you.
But when that happens, this person is not the one. When someone is truly the person God has for you, you both will find a way to offer grace and forgiveness whenever it’s required to stay together (1 Peter 3:7-9).
5. When You Meet The One, God Will Produce a Radical Dependence on Christ
People get married all the time without God’s blessing on it. You can certainly choose to be with someone and you can choose to stay together through shear will power. But this is not the mark of a God-centered relationship.
When we are walking in God’s will for our lives, we will be radically dependent on Jesus because we can never obey God’s will without God’s grace working in our lives. As Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Obviously we can do something without remaining in Christ. We can sin, for example, by not remaining in Christ. So what Jesus is saying here is that we cannot do anything good without remaining in him. We can’t actually bear fruit for God if we don’t remain in Jesus.
So when God reveals the one he wants you to marry, he will also produce a radical dependence on Christ in your life because we can’t do anything good without Jesus.
