If you’re not praying for your future husband right now, he will be worse off. He needs your prayers even though you may not have even met him yet.
Prayer is powerful. It really works. It actually changes things in the natural world. This is why Paul asked others to pray for him. In Ephesians 6:19-20 (NIV) Paul requested, “Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.”
Just as Paul needed others to prayerfully intercede for him, we all need this. And if you want to be a wife one day, it is wise to start taking on the mindset of a wife now. Your future husband will need your help, so it is absolutely right for you to start helping him now through prayer. As Paul said to the Philippians, “It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart . . . ” (Philippians 1:7).
As you hold your future husband in your heart, here are 5 biblical ways you can pray for him that he really needs from you.
1. Your Future Husband Needs You to Pray for His Salvation
If you are a Christian woman, you obviously want to be married to a strong godly man. But it’s possible your future husband is not there yet, which perhaps is the reason you haven’t met him yet. Maybe he needs to get saved first before God will let you meet him. In 1 Timothy 2:1-4, Paul wrote:
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Praying for someone’s salvation actually helps them get saved. We don’t know who your future husband is, thus we don’t know if he’s a Christian yet or not. So it’s wise to begin by praying for his salvation.
2. Your Future Husband Needs You to Pray for His Ongoing Sanctification as a Christian Man
Once we get saved and become true believers in Jesus, we will enter a maturing season that will last for our whole earthly lives.
Thus, it’s possible your future husband has not yet reached a level of spiritual maturity needed for marriage, which could be why you haven’t met him. Either way, whether he is very mature or still an early believer, pray that the Lord would mature him into the man God wants him to be.
As Paul said in Philippians 1:4-6 (NIV), “In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
3. Your Future Husband Needs You to Pray for His Interactions with Other Women
When a man is walking in the flesh, he will be tempted by seductive women. Thus, your future husband will benefit greatly if you pray for his self-control and maturity in this area. For example, you could pray Proverbs 5 over him.
He also needs to be forming good habits towards women before even meeting you. By showing Christian love and service to other sisters in Christ as a good brother in Christ, the Lord will be training him to love you in marriage one day.
As Paul instructed Timothy, treat “older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity” (1 Timothy 5:2).
4. Your Future Husband Needs You to Pray that He Would Be Delivered from Evil People
As you know, this is a dark world. Satan uses unbelievers to attack Christians in many ways. Your future husband is going through things right now that involve evil people being used by Satan to attack him. Pray for his deliverance and strength in the Spirit. As Paul said in Romans 15:30-32, which reads:
I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company.”
5. Your Future Husband Needs You to Pray that He Would Have Eyes to See You and Pursue You
In Ephesians 1:18 (NIV), Paul wrote, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you . . .” Of course Paul was praying about them seeing the glories of Christ. But the principle of how God alone can enlighten our eyes to see what we need to see certainly applies to your future husband finding you one day.
Pray that he will see you when the time is right and know how to pursue you in the ways that you need from him. Pray that God prepares his heart to speak to your heart so you know he is actually your future husband.
