What do I mean by this phrase, “God will bless your finances”?
I’m not necessarily saying that God will give you more money if you do these certain things. However, as you will see, many of these principles do usually lead to an increase in wealth through proper stewardship and an increase in income.
And yet, more than an increase in finances, what we really need is for our finances to be something that pleases the Lord rather than displeases him. Money can be a blessing or a curse based upon how we view it and use it.
Therefore, here are 6 biblical principles that allow the Lord to bless your finances.
1. God Will Bless Your Finances If You Don’t Love Money
1 Timothy 6:9-10, “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”
God wants us to be able to control our money rather than being controlled by our money. Not only will this protect you from making unwise purchases, it will also increase your ability to generate income.
When you have high character and you are willing to put aside your financial interest so you can do what is best for the people you are serving, they end up trusting you and wanting to do more business with you anyways.
When you love money and don’t care about people, they feel it, they don’t trust you, and then they won’t promote you at work or buy from you if you’re a business.
2. God Will Bless Your Finances If You Choose a Motive that Empowers You to Do the Hard Things Required in Order to Be Blessed Financially
Hebrews 12:2, “For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Being wise with money is hard. Why not just use that credit card? Why shouldn’t you lie a little on your taxes? Why shouldn’t you keep letting your parents pay your bills rather than getting a job? Why not have a huge payment so you can have flashy car? Why should you invest now rather than having a little extra cash in your pocket?
If you’re going to do the right things financially, you have to choose an important enough motive. When your “why” is strong enough, you will always figure out your “how.” If you start thinking about being a good provider so you are ready to have a wife and kids, if you start thinking about the self-respect you would gain if you stopped mooching off your parents, if you start craving freedom from your terrible work environment so you can live your life in a much more enjoyable way – then you will have the needed motivation to do the hard things required to have blessed finances by God.
Our ultimate motive in everything must be to please God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Jesus was able to go to the cross, even though he didn’t want to, because he looked ahead to the joy that was before him.
3. God Will Bless Your Finances If You “Sharpen the Ax”
Ecclesiastes 10:10, “If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed.”
In other words, those who take time to do things efficiently and skillfully always achieve results faster than the one who just works hard. There’s only so many hours in a day. To make more money and keep more of the money you make, you have to use the mind God gave you.
Through investing in your knowledge and skills, God will bless your finances.
4. God Will Bless Your Finances If You Work Hard
Proverbs 10:4, “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.”
While skill is very necessary, the will is always supreme when it comes to those who succeed and those who fail. No matter how smart you are, you won’t get anywhere in life without hard work. You can do more with your hard work when you are wise, but if you are wise without hard work, you will do less than the man who is not wise but still works hard.
5. God Will Bless Your Finances When You Have an Investor’s Mindset Rather than a Debtor’s Mindset
Proverbs 22:7, “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.”
A debtor spends what he doesn’t have to get what he doesn’t need. An investor uses what he has to make even more. Be an investor if you want God to bless your finances.
Matthew 25:20-21, “‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.’”
6. God Will Bless Your Finances If You Are Generous and Support His Kingdom Projects Financially
Malachi 3:10, “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
You can never out give God. He will never let you make a real sacrifice. Whatever you give up for him, one way or the other, you will always receive more in return:
Jesus said, ‘Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.’” (Mark 10:29-31)
