3 Ways the Devil Uses the Scarcity Mindset to Hide You from Your Person

Ephesians 2:20-21

Besides blocking your salvation and spiritual fruit for God, perhaps the greatest goal Satan has for your life is to get you paired up with one of his loyal servants.

But how will Satan accomplish this? As Christians, we know we should avoid linking with evil people, and yet, again and again, Christians fall in this very area.

To tempt you to fall for the wrong person, Satan will tempt you to have certain mindsets that make his lies much more potent – such as the scarcity mindset.

Here are 3 ways the devil uses the scarcity mindset to deceive Christians with the wrong person.

1. The Scarcity Mindset Will Tempt You to Crave an Inconsistent Person

The scarcity mindset is a false belief that there’s never enough for everyone. When it comes to relationships, this mindset will manifest in statements like:

  • “That one person I like is the only person I will ever like.”
  • “If this doesn’t work out, it means I’ll be alone forever.”
  • “If I’m not careful, I might miss my chance to be with the one person God has for me.”
  • “Oh great, another person just got taken off the dating market.”
  • “Even though this person isn’t what I want, it’s better to have someone than no one at all.”

It’s not hard to see how Satan could easily use the scarcity mindset to tempt you into making very unwise relationship decisions.

For example, the scarcity mindset plays on our pleasure-reward system. Studies show that pleasure is increased when we are randomly rewarded in an unexpected way. This is why gambling is so addicting. The thrill of winning is intensified because you never know when you’ll get lucky.

Likewise, when someone is unpredictable, this manipulates your pleasure-reward system and intensifies the dopamine when they do give you positive attention. In a sick way, this is why so many people end up craving the attention of the inconsistent person more than that of the consistent one.

The scarcity mindset can be used by Satan to tempt you to think the harder it is to get someone’s attention, the more valuable their attention must be. This can tempt you to start chasing someone who’s playing mental games with you by being hot and then cold. Since their attention seems scarce, you are then tricked into believing that their attention is more valuable than the attention of the person who’s loving you in abundance.

One way to combat this attack is to remember what true, biblical love looks like. Biblical love is consistent and strong, not fickle and fleeting (1 Corinthians 13:4-12). When you’ve been living in the world for too long, you subtly get a twisted understanding of love. In Hollywood scripts, the nice guy is always the loser while the bad boy is the real lover the woman wants. Likewise, the woman who’s impossible to win is somehow seen as most desirable rather than the stable option who’s predictable.

Hollywood is Satan’s playground. Always live in reality. It’s all a lie. While an unstable person might feel exciting, that’s only because you still have a worldly mindset. When you mature and get stable in the Lord, you will quickly realize how much happier you would be with a person who’s not acting like a teenager all the time.

Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

2. The Scarcity Mindset Will Tempt You to Compromise on Your Convictions

When you think there is a limited number of godly options that you must compete for, like parents rushing into the store to get one of the few remaining popular toys for Christmas, you’ll end up behaving in ways you would never have expected from yourself. To avoid losing someone, you will compromise on your Christian values.

The way to combat these attacks from Satan is to go back to the truth and realize that our God is abundant in all that he does. There is no shortage with him. Even when there really is a shortage of healthy Christian options for you when it comes to the factual numbers, God is able to create something out of nothing (Hebrews 11:3).

The key is to trust him and not compromise because of Satan’s fear tactics rooted in the scarcity mindset. Remember what Scripture states about the God of abundance:

  • Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
  • 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
  • Deuteronomy 28:12, “The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands.

3. The Scarcity Mindset Will Be Used to Tempt You to Settle

The scarcity mindset will tempt you to tolerate toxic behavior because you’ll think this person is the best you will ever find.

Never settle! The sooner you let Satan’s option for you go, the sooner you can receive God’s option.

In John 10:10, Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
