3 Signs God Is Answering Your Prayer About Them

James 3:14-17

Here are 3 signs that often mean God really does plan on putting you with that person you’ve been praying about.

And if you haven’t heard, my new book was just released. It’s called Masculinity on Mission: Reclaim What God Intended for Your Manhood. This book also includes reflection questions for individuals or small-group studies. In Masculinity on Mission, you will learn:

  • How modern man has been emasculated
  • Why Christian men start out passionate, but slowly slip back into sin
  • What is your purpose as a man according to the Scriptures
  • Why you must have enemies
  • How to pursue a woman and love her well
  • How to serve God, family, and country
  • What it means to be a man on mission for Christ

1. If This Specific Person Seems to Be an Answer to Your Prayers for “The Right One” Rather Than for “That One,” Then Perhaps They Really Are “The One”

When and how did this person come into your life? Are they an ex who was a part of your life when you weren’t following the Lord? Are they someone you’ve thought about for years whenever you get lonely, perhaps signifying infatuation? Are they the only Christian single person you know, perhaps signifying a desperation because they seem like the only option right now?

While God can certainly take messy beginnings and turn them into something beautiful, it’s unwise to get stuck on one person. Rather than spending the majority of your prayer time asking God for “that one,” it’s much better to spend the majority of your relationship requests asking God for “the right one.”

It’s not wrong to ask for “that one” sometimes. My warning is really about the emphasis of your prayers. Most of the time, it’s much better to ask God for his will to be done rather than asking him to do our will.

And, when you have spent time asking for “the right one,” the Lord will usually start answering that prayer by first helping you know what that person will look like. Instead of putting the label “the right one” on the specific person you want, God will help you understand what the right qualities are, and then he will help you see those qualities in the person he wants for you. Philippians 1:9-11 states:

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”

As your love and knowledge increase overall, you are better able to discern what is excellent for you in specific ways.

So, if you’ve been praying for the right one and now God has brought someone specific into view who seems to match those biblical prayers for a healthy relationship, that’s a great sign the Lord may want you with this person.

2. If God Has Given You the Wisdom to See Why This Is the Right Person for You, This Is a Good Sign He Wants You with This Person You’re Praying About

When God actually wants you to be with someone, it won’t just be an emotional experience. Yes, you will want to be with this person and this person will want to be with you. But God will also give you tangible evidence that it’s biblically wise for you two to be together, too.

In James 1:5, we are told, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” However, in James 3:14-17, we are given more information on what God’s wisdom will actually look like when we receive it:

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

Therefore, when you pray about someone and God really is putting you two together, you will see biblical fruit that aligns with his heaven-sent wisdom:

  • You both will be pursuing purity together
  • You both will sense peace when praying about each other
  • There will be a loving gentleness in your interactions with each other
  • You both will be acting reasonably rather than emotionally intoxicated
  • You will have mercy for each other when problems arise
  • And there will be many other forms of good spiritual fruit manifesting when God really wants you with the person you have been praying about

3. If You’ve Been Prayerfully Following the Lord and Your Path Has Now Crossed with This Person’s Path, That’s a Good Sign God Wants You Two Together

Life isn’t about getting married. It’s not about finding your person. It’s not even about being happy. Rather, life is really all about glorifying God.

And yet, marriage can be used to glorify God. And God wants you to look for the right person so you can bring him glory through this relationship. And when you fully serve God in all that you do, including in your romantic life, you will end up experiencing the most amount of happiness possible.

Therefore, when two people are both seeking to follow the Lord and glorify him, oftentimes God causes their paths to cross so they can glorify him together. Psalm 37:23 (NIV) states, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him . . .”

So yes, keep praying about this person. But also, pray about the bigger things in life, too. As God directs you to serve him, he will also be leading you closer to the right person he has for you, as a spouse is really a partner in serving God.
