4 Common Unbiblical Beliefs that Will Block Your Future Marriage

Romans 12:2

Have you ever asked, “Why am I still single?” or “What can I do differently to find a Christian partner?” or “What’s holding me back from meeting my future spouse?”

There are countless answers we could explore, but one overlooked answer revolves around our beliefs. Beliefs affect our actions in ways that are hard to fully comprehend. But beneath the surface, every action you take is actually being dictated by an inner belief.

Therefore, today we will explore 4 common beliefs many Christians hold that keep them from finding true love.

Also, no matter your age or relationship history, if you are a Christian single who wants to glorify the Lord in marriage one day, I designed AGW University for you.

Many people ask me if they are too old for AGW University, while others ask if they are too young, and still others wonder if their unique circumstances would be addressed through these courses. The truth is, I can confidently say that whatever your variables, if you meet the criteria of being a Christian single person who wants to be married one day, these courses will help you.

How can I make that claim? Because I’m not offering you my personal opinion that only relates to certain people of a certain age from a certain background. I’m offering you biblical principles. And the Bible’s wisdom on relationships is relevant to everyone. The key is knowing how to rightly apply it to your life.

False Belief #1: “I Have to Play the Worldly Dating Game to Meet Someone”

Rather than being upfront and honest, people who are playing games will try to keep each other guessing. They’ll text, and then not respond for an unusually long time. They’ll be flirtatious but then give you the cold shoulder. They’ll ask you to go to church, but then they’ll pressure you into sexual sin.

When your mind has been infected with worldliness, you’ll begin to believe this is just the game you have to play if you want to be married one day.

Also, when you have a worldly dating mindset, safe starts to feel boring, mature starts to feel passionless, and honest starts to feel too easy. In a warped way, you’ve been trained to desire immature behavior because you’ve equated the erratic with passion.

Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

False Belief #2: “I’m Unworthy of the Person I Would Really Want”

One reason many Christians keep ending up in unhealthy relationships is that they think their past mistakes have disqualified them from being with a healthy person.

When you have low self-worth, you subconsciously say to yourself, “I don’t deserve a good person, so I’m attracted to the bad options because I think they’re the only ones I have a chance with.” You probably aren’t verbalizing this, but your actions might be saying it (Colossians 1:21).

This is Satan’s lie! When you’re a Christian, you no longer stand on your own merit (Colossians 1:12-14), which is a relief, because none of us deserve a healthy relationship. Only in Christ can two people choose to love each other in a mature, healthy way.

False Belief #3: The Perfect Person Is Somewhere Out There

We may not verbalize it this way, but the logic goes something like this, “If I could just marry a beautiful woman, then I would feel whole and happy.” Or, “If I could just be loved by a strong man, then I would no longer feel unworthy.”

The problem with thinking the perfect guy or the perfect woman is somewhere out there is that it causes you to be on a wild goose chase for something that doesn’t exist. Even when you meet a really great Christian, your need for them to be perfect will sabotage the whole thing. You will get mad about small things. You will feel unhappy without knowing why. And you will constantly be jumping from person to person because they only excite you when you don’t know them that well yet.

While I do believe God has someone picked for you, I don’t believe you have a perfect soulmate out there. The person God has for you will be someone who wants to honor the Lord with you, but along the way you two will stumble.

Reject the lie that you two need to be perfect to enjoy a relationship together. Love, not perfection, is what binds two hearts together (Colossians 3:14).

False Belief #4: “If It Is Meant to Be, It Will Happen”

In most cases, this statement is not wrong. However, the way you apply this type of thinking is what can be so dangerous.

The sovereignty of God is biblical and true. God really does have a plan for your marriage because God has a plan for everything (Ephesians 1:11). He really is in control of the story we are all living in (Psalm 139:16). Without a belief that God is all-powerful, we will live lives of panic, anxiety, and despair.

However, none of these truths mean that your actions don’t matter now (Galatians 6:7-9). Even your words matter (Matthew 12:36). The things you do or don’t, say or don’t say – all of it has real consequences! God is not going to wave his magic love spell over someone and have them marry you just because it’s his will, even though you are not following his leading (Proverbs 16:3).

A right belief in God’s sovereign power to accomplish his will is one that will result in more action on our part, not less. Passivity is never the fruit God produces (Matthew 25:24-30). While he will lead us to be patient and wise, he created us to live our lives for his glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).

To receive the person he has for you, you must follow his guidance (Proverbs 3:5-6).

And for those of you who want to follow the Lord in relationships but you’re not sure how, I created AGW University for you. If you’re new to my channel, you probably don’t need this yet. But if you’re a regular viewer, I created these courses for those of you who want to go even deeper than my short weekly videos and articles allow.

These are in-depth biblical courses for Christian singles who want to put in the hard work now so they can reap the rewards later in their future marriage.

So if you want guidance in applying the Scriptures to meet, date, and marry the right person God may have for you, the enrollment deadline is 9/16/26.
