3 Signs God Is Telling You to Focus More on Him

Here are 3 signs God is telling you to focus more on him.

1. If You Feel Distant from God, He Is Telling You to Focus More on Him in Life

Some people feel distant from God but just don’t care. Certainly not everyone loves God and wants to seek him. But if you feel distant from God and you don’t want to feel this way, this is a sign God is telling you to focus more on him in your life.

A longing in your heart for more of God was put there by God himself. You can see this truth when you look at what Jesus said in John 6. Let’s take a look. So when you go to John chapter 6 and read verse 44 it says,  “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them . . . .”

So if you do feel distant from God, this is a sign God is calling you to seek him more. For as Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

2. If You Are Anxious About Earthly Needs, This Is a Sign God Is Telling You to Focus More on Him

People often misunderstand what the Bible says about worrying and planning. God is not against planning. God is not against Christians being practical. However, God does not want his people to worry and be anxious about the earthly things they need.

Let’s look at Matthew 6:8. It says, “your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Anxiety, therefore, is a sign that we are focusing too much on our needs and not enough on the God who already knows our needs. This is why in Matthew 6:33 Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

If our focus is not on our Heavenly Father, we will be overcome with earthly fears. Anxiety is a sign that God is calling you to focus more on him.

3. If You Have an Unmet Longing in Your Heart, This Is a Sign God Is Telling You to Focus More on Him

God does not condemn our enjoyment of earthly things. God does not say it is bad to have desires for things on earth. However, when these desires usurp God’s place in our hearts, this is when sin and idolatry take place.

I love the balance that 1 Timothy 6:17 gives us, “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” Notice at the end it said that God provides “everything for our enjoyment.”

When earthly blessings are handled correctly, they can bring healthy enjoyment that does not result in sin. But as we all know, many times our desires for earthly things goes too far. Anytime we have an unmet longing in our hearts, it must not lead us into despair or anger towards God. Rather, all unmet longings for earthly blessings must remind us of our ultimate need, which is for God himself.

Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” I don’t believe this means that if we love God he will bless us with all the earthly stuff we want. Rather, when we take delight in the Lord, the greatest desire of our heart will be met because delighting in the Lord is our greatest desire. It is our greatest need.

So if you have an unmet longing in your heart for a relationship, a material possession, or some other earthly blessing – remember that this desire is not bad. But this unmet desire should ultimately remind you that this earthly blessing is not what your heart needs the most. God is what we all need the most.

So if you have a longing in your heart for something, this is a sign God is telling you to focus more on him. He’s the greatest source of joy there is, for as Psalm 16:2 says, “I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.’”
