Have you been asking God for clarity about a certain person you have strong feelings for? Are you seeking the Lord’s favor, hoping he puts you and that person together? Or are you trying to navigate all the confusing feelings you have for someone that you’re not sure about?
While God will give us specific direction and counsel when we seek him about relationships and romantic desires (Proverbs 3:5-6), there are times when God will eventually say, “It’s time to lay this down.”
When the Lord tells us to lay something down, it doesn’t always mean give it up or let it go. Sometimes it just means to surrender it fully to him. No matter what does or doesn’t happen, by laying it down, you are choosing to trust the Lord with all your heart.
Therefore, here are 3 instances where God might be saying to you, “Lay it down.”
1. If You’ve Done All You Can Do and Now You Just Need to Wait, God Could Be Saying, “Lay It Down”
I don’t believe that this is the first thing God will usually say to you once you just start asking him about someone. While God is the only one who can provide you with the counsel you need about your future with this person, to give you that counsel, he will usually direct you to take wise steps.
Yes, the Holy Spirit will speak to you and illuminate the Scriptures so you can live biblically, but when it comes to relationships, he will often also need to direct you to take certain actions so you can find the answers you need.
For every action there is a reaction. And even when you do something proactive, like try to talk to a man more or start texting a woman, a non-answer from them is in fact a response. So whether they respond really positively, or don’t respond at all, when you do something, their response can be used by the Lord to give you the answers you have been asking him about.
With that said, throughout the process of finding clarity, there are also pockets of waiting. Once you send that text, it’s time to wait. Once you are more proactive in talking to someone, it’s time to see if they start warming to you or if they start avoiding you.
It’s in these moments where the panic can set in: “Was my text stupid?” “Does he think I’m desperate?” “Was I too forward?” “Did I scare her away?” “Should I reach out again to clarify everything I said?”
1 Peter 5:5-6, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
If you’ve taken wise steps to find clarity from the Lord about this person but all you can now do is wait, it’s time to trust, to sit in his presence, and to cast all your burdens on him. The Lord is probably saying, “Lay it down.”
2. If You’ve Already Received the Answer but You’re Rejecting It Because It’s Not the Answer You Wanted, God Could Be Saying, “Lay It Down”
While waiting is essential when you are seeking an answer from the Lord about a certain person you have feelings for, it’s also biblical to say that indefinite waiting for someone is unwise.
Relationships happen in reality. After a while, if someone keeps waiting for an answer about someone, they usually get tempted to create a narrative in their mind that gives them false hope. But again, relationships happen in reality. If you’re waiting and waiting and waiting to find clarity about someone, usually this means you already have clarity but you just don’t like the answer you’ve received.
Perhaps you were inviting towards a man, and while he was polite, he never started to pursue you. Or perhaps a woman was showing you attention when you started to pursue her, but after going on a date, she began to distance herself and no longer responds to your texts. Or maybe you saw someone across the room, felt a strong emotional pull towards that person, but then you never saw them again. And no matter how much you pray about it, nothing changes.
In times like this, acceptance is the path forward. It’s okay to be disappointed. It’s okay to go through a season of grieving. But never deny reality. Always live in the truth. God has a good plan for you. Never get stuck waiting for something he isn’t planning on giving you.
1 Peter 5:10-11, “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
If this is happening to you, the Lord is probably saying, “Lay it down.”
3. If All the “What Ifs” Are Driving You Crazy, God Is Probably Saying, “Lay It Down”
Maybe you’re just not sure what is happening. Maybe you’re not sure if you should do something more proactive or just keep waiting. You’re not sure if God has given you an answer that you are denying or if there really still is hope for something with this person in the future. Or maybe you are in the active “get to know you” stages with this person, but the unknowns about the future are wearing you out.
Here, too, God may be saying, “Lay it down.” Remember, when the Lord tells us to lay something down, it doesn’t always mean give it up or let it go. Sometimes it just means to surrender it fully to him. No matter what does or doesn’t happen, by laying it down, you are choosing to trust the Lord with all your heart.
Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
