God is ultimately sovereign over Satan. So even if Satan does send someone into your life, we need not fear since God is with us.
With that said, throughout Scripture, we are taught that people who don’t follow Christ are following the devil (Ephesians 2:2) and that Satan does use people to attack other people (John 8:44, John 13:27). Therefore, we must be on guard (Ephesians 6:10-13).
Here are 5 things you will often see when someone is sent by Satan.
1. If This Person Is Not Calling on the Lord from a Pure Heart, They Were Probably Sent By Satan
Whatever God wants you to do, Satan will try to tempt you to do the opposite. For example, in 2 Timothy 2:22, God tells us to be in fellowship with people who are calling on the Lord from a pure heart. Therefore, Satan will tempt you to be in fellowship with people who aren’t doing this. 2 Timothy 2:22-26 states:
So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.”
Don’t let your longing for a pure relationship tempt you to just settle for any relationship. When you settle for something less than what you truly crave, you will feel a greater emptiness than you did to begin with. Satan wants you to link with people who are not pursuing the Lord so that they will influence you away from Jesus.
2. If Someone Is Tempting You Like Satan Tempted Eve, This Person Was Sent by the Devil
2 Corinthians 11:3-4 states:
But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.”
How did Satan deceive Eve? He used cunning. More specifically, he tempted Eve to believe that God was withholding something good from her and that she should take matters into her own hands to get what he was withholding (Genesis 3:1-7).
Likewise, if someone is tempting you to believe something that contradicts what Jesus has said, this person is being used by the devil.
3. If This Person Is Disguising Themselves as a Servant of Christ but Secretly Walks in Darkness, They Are Sent By Satan
The longer you walk on the Christian road, the more you will see people who are pretending to walk on the same road as you. This is why relationships should always develop slowly. Anyone can deceive you by saying and doing the right things for a short period of time. But only a true Christian can say and do the right things for Christ through his Spirit over a consistent period of time.
As 2 Corinthians 11:12-15 explains, those who follow Satan will often pretend to follow Jesus. But over time, the truth is always revealed.
And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”
4. When All the Confirmation You Have About This Relationship Requires You to Twist Scripture to Mean Something It Doesn’t Mean
When someone was sent to you by God, you will know they were sent by God through receiving multiple forms of confirmation:
- This person and your relationship with them will match with the signs you are supposed to see in the Bible.
- The Holy Spirit will give you a healthy peace in your heart about this person.
- And the circumstantial evidence will confirm what you sense, meaning you will actually see things in reality and not just imagine them in your mind that actually confirm this is a biblical relationship.
But when someone is sent to you by Satan, you will look for confirmation but be tempted to falsely manufacture that confirmation. Through twisting and manipulating the Scriptures in unnatural ways, you will try to make this relationship seem biblical even though it is not.
Satan knows the Bible too, and he tries to twist it to deceive God’s people. As Romans 16:17-20 warns us, there are people who are smooth talkers and know how to manipulate others. But when something is biblical, it will be straightforward and easy to see in Scripture.
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”
5. If Your Joy in the Lord Is Decreasing the More You Associate with This Person, This Probably Means Satan Sent This Person to You
Satan knows what Nehemiah 8:10 states, “. . . for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Satan wants you to be weak in the Lord so you are more easily tempted into sin. Thus, he tries to decrease your joy in Christ. Philippians 4:4-7 says:
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
If someone in your life is hindering you from obeying these instructions, they are being used by Satan. Move on. Find your joy in the Lord, for only he can fully satisfy your soul (Psalm 16:2, 11).
