1. When You Meet The One Appointed to Be Your Spouse, They Will Be an Answer to Your Prayers

Genesis 24:14, “Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.”

This was the prayer of Abraham’s servant who was sent to find a wife for Isaac. Obviously your relationship journey is going to be different than Isaac’s and Rebekah’s. But symbolically, there story contains many similar details that yours will include.

The servant prayed to see certain qualities so he would know who God appointed for Isaac. Likewise, you should pray about certain spiritual qualities you want your spouse to have (Ephesians 5:21-33, 1 Peter 3:1-6) so that God will have a way of showing you he has answered your prayers (Matthew 7:7, Philippians 4:6-7).

2. When You Meet The One Appointed to Be Your Spouse, They Will Be Revealed to You When You Are in a Season for Marriage

Genesis 24:1, “Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.”

Abraham sent the servant to find a wife for Isaac once Isaac was at the season of life to be married. When Rebekah went back with the servant to meet Isaac, they immediately got married (Genesis 24:67).

This is a principle God will use in your life too when he’s revealing the one he’s appointed to you. When you are young, you may feel like someone is your future spouse. When you don’t know someone that well, you may sense the Lord saying, “That’s the one.” There are many times, however, where these experiences prove false. The only way to truly know you will end up marrying someone is if you marry them.

You may meet the right one at the wrong time. But if they are truly the right one for you, eventually it will also be the right time. If it’s never the right time, they are not actually the right one. Thus, when God is revealing your future spouse to you, this will happen in a season where you are actually prepared for marriage.

3. When God Is Revealing the One Appointed to Be Your Spouse, This Person Will Be Marked By Christian Character

Genesis 24:3-4 (NIV), “I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”

God didn’t want the Israelites mixing with other cultures because those communities worshiped false gods. Today, the marriage restrictions God has for his people are not ethnic or cultural (Ephesians 2:14-15). Rather, they are spiritual qualities that will manifest through our character.

God commands Christians to marry other Christians (1 Corinthians 7:39). And true Christians will be marked by certain qualities that are the evidence of their salvation (James 2:17). Thus, when God is revealing the person he has appointed to be your future spouse, this person will meet the biblical qualities needed to get married.

4. When God Is Revealing the One Appointed to Be Your Spouse, There Will Be an Equal Willingness in Both of You to Get Married

Genesis 24:8, “But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.”

Throughout the Bible, there is a principle of mutual willingness being a sign that God has you on the right path. For example, when Jesus sent out his disciples, he told them to stay in the towns that received them and to leave the towns that rejected them (Matthew 10:14). In Acts 18:6, it states of Paul, “And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, ‘Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.’” Even in our own walk with God, he only has fellowship with those who also want fellowship with him (Romans 1:24-25).

Thus, one clear sign that will always be present when God is revealing your appointed spouse is mutual willingness in both of you to be married. In Genesis 24:58, the servant saw the confirmation needed to know that this was the woman for Isaac. It states, “And they called Rebekah and said to her, ‘Will you go with this man?’ She said, ‘I will go.’”

5. When God Is Revealing The One Appointed to Be Your Spouse, There Will Be Marks of His Providential Hand Working

Genesis 24:7, “The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.”

The story of Isaac and Rebekah becoming a husband and wife should not be used as direct model to follow. However, the spiritual principles are relevant for everyone who wants a godly marriage.

Just as God had to supernaturally arrange the events in Genesis 24 so everyone knew Rebekah and Isaac were appointed by God to be married, so too will God have to arrange the circumstances in your lives when you meet the right person.
