The words in this article are taken from my new book, Masculinity on Mission.
You are being lied to.
Satan himself is propagating “a big lie” through every means of communication available to him, and this lie has been quite effective in killing the soul of modern man.
Before you write me off as just another conspiracy theory quack, hear me out. You might be thinking something like, “But Mark, if there was some big lie out there deceiving us all, wouldn’t it be obvious?” Actually, no, it would not be obvious. Take it from one of the most profound liars and evil men who has ever existed, Adolf Hitler. In his book Mein Kampf, he wrote:
. . . in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think there may be some other explanation.”
Joseph Goebbels, the head of Nazi Germany’s Ministry of Propaganda, said:
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
These guys were clearly friends with the devil. This form of deception, The Big Lie method, is so powerful because it creates an environment that doesn’t just lie about one thing; rather, it lies to you through creating a paradigm of living that is false. It’s not like a cheating spouse who says, “No, I didn’t cheat on you.” Instead, it’s like a spouse who gaslights you every day about everything, abusing your mind so badly for decades that you become a shell of your former self.
So what is this big lie from Satan that is being voiced everywhere a man looks?
Answer: Sacrifice is bad.
There are a million other ways we could articulate it. Other forms of The Big Lie are:
- Your comfort is the goal of life.
- Entertainment is better than work.
- Stay free and avoid responsibility.
- You don’t have what you want because someone hasn’t given it to you yet.
- Safety first.
- Danger is bad.
- A beautiful woman would solve all your problems.
- Your wife is the problem.
- A five-minute work week is the dream.
- If it makes you happy, do it.
- You deserve more.
- Pleasure is always good.
- Pain is always bad.
And modern man has just smiled and said, “Okay, if you say so.” Behind each of these lies is a spirit of passivity and victimhood. There is a godless, wicked form of feminism that has corrupted the male mind, poisoning the paradigm through which he sees everything. Like Adam, who just took the fruit that was handed to him, modern man is suffering because of passivity.
You’ve been told that happiness will come when someone or something gives it to you. That’s a lie. The mindset of waiting to receive happiness creates a victim mentality in a man. “Women are the problem,” “These dang politicians are the issue,” “This frigging economy is killing me,” and so on. If the problem is always somewhere out there, it’s pretty easy to sit back and complain. What else can you do?
Essentially, the big lie being told to us is that the Bible’s teaching about the path to life is wrong. Even from most pulpits, the undeniable theme of suffering leading to satisfaction found in Scripture is somehow silenced in the sermon. We read the words of Paul, Peter, and the prophets, men who lived hard lives and died for God’s glory, and somehow feel their message tells us to avoid sacrifice. Show me the verse that says, “God just wants to make you happy.” I’ll wait.
Don’t get me wrong, I do believe God wants us to be filled with an unimaginable happiness. My point, however, is that Scripture teaches the path to life involves choosing to sacrifice, not running from it. Maybe, just maybe, Jesus is telling the truth, and Satan, the world, and our own sin nature are lying to us. In Matthew 16:25, Jesus said, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
What if pain wasn’t the problem? What if chasing comfort is actually what is killing us? What if our obsession with safety has become the most dangerous thing in our lives? What if our refusal to sacrifice is actually the reason modern man is silently suffering alone in the dark, with little glowing devices illuminating our lifeless faces?
Scripture is clear. Life doesn’t come from clinging to your life. Life comes through choosing to die for a greater purpose than yourself. Throughout this study, we will unpack what that purpose is. But for now, I encourage you to start looking at the world around you with more skepticism.
But maybe I’m wrong. Don’t blindly trust me. That’s what has gotten us into this mess to begin with – blind trust. So rather than telling you what to think and how to live, I’m simply going to share what I’ve learned thus far in the journey. You’ll have to make your own conclusions.
My only challenge to you is that you commit to finding the truth, no matter the cost. Without a fierce commitment to finding out what is true, you’ll never find it. It’s like Truman Burbank, the main character in the movie The Truman Show, played by Jim Carrey. He was born into a fake world, a lie created by Christof, played by Ed Harris. When Christof is asked why Truman hasn’t realized he’s living in a TV show, he explains, “We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented. It’s as simple as that.”
Deep down, however, Truman always knew something was off. He sensed the lie, but he couldn’t prove it . . . until he was willing to die. You see, Christof, to keep Truman trapped in his fake, camera-filled world, instilled in Truman a fear of water from a young age. And, wouldn’t you know, Truman just so happened to live on an island (which was really just a giant TV set designed to feel like an island). Thus, to break free from the lie and finally find the truth, Truman had to face his fears. He got into a boat, sailed through the storm, and finally hit a wall leading out of the studio and into the truth.
Likewise, as we try to regain the truth as men in our own fake, camera-filled world, we too must enter into this journey with an absolute commitment to finding the truth, no matter the cost.
You are being lied to.
Now let’s find the truth that will set us free.
