No human is absolutely good except Jesus Christ himself (Romans 3:23). However, according to Scripture, there are people who are walking with God and then there are people who are following Satan (John 8:42-44).
So if you are a Christian man and you want to be in a relationship with a virtuous woman from the Lord, how will you notice her? Here are 4 biblical marks of a good woman sent by God.
1. A Good Woman from the Lord Will Be Marked By a Gentle and Quiet Spirit
“Boss chicks” are not biblical women.
There’s nothing wrong with a woman being opinionated, with having goals, or with leading in the workplace. It really comes down to her spirit. And by spirit, I don’t necessarily mean her spiritual aura. Rather, I’m really talking about her attitude, her disposition, the feeling you get when you are around her.
If she projects a worldly masculinity rather than a biblical femininity, she’s not a good woman from the Lord. Notice how 1 Peter 3:4 describes a godly woman, “. . . let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”
So having “a gentle and quiet spirit” does not mean she has to be introverted, soft spoken, or a wallflower. Rather, it means her heart is inviting and kind. She’s womanly. She’s ready to care for others and love people from a feminine place.
2. A Good Woman from the Lord Will Be Marked By the Ability to Multiply What You Give Her
When we’re talking about a good woman from the Lord, we’re not just trying to identify a moral woman. Christian men and women are called to be moral and Christlike in their character. Rather, we are trying to identify a good woman in the sense that she would make a good wife for you one day.
One key element of a good wife according to the Bible is the ability to multiply what the husband gives her. The husband is the provider. However, the wife is supposed to take what the man is providing and then multiply it and use it well.
Symbolically, this can be seen with food. The man brings the food in and the woman multiplies it into a meal. I’m not saying a good woman must be a good cook. But I am saying, like a good cook, she needs to be able to take what you offer and add her skills to it, making it all even better.
As Proverbs 31:11-14 says of a noble wife, “The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar.”
If she’s just a consumer, she’s not a good woman from the Lord. A noble wife adds value.
3. A Good Woman from the Lord Will Want to Have Sex with You in Marriage
Sex is important. Sadly, Christians often forget this simple truth.
Because sex is so often idolized and used in sinful ways, sometimes Christians demonize it and try to devalue it. But that’s not biblical. God made sex not only to bring forth children but to also help the husband and wife stay connected in an intimate way. If a husband and wife aren’t having sex, they will struggle to stay connected emotionally as a husband and wife should (Proverbs 5:18-19).
1 Corinthians 7:3-4 states, “The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.” It’s clearly implied in this passage that both the husband and wife will want to have sex with each other.
A good woman from the Lord will want to be your wife so she can have sex with you. She will know sex is important for you two to stay connected in marriage.
4. A Good Woman from the Lord Will Respect You and Grant You Grace When You Need It
Every woman wants a man they can respect. However, only a mature Christian woman will know she won’t ever find a man who will always be worthy of her respect.
Of course there are good men out there who love the Lord and are worthy of respect. But even these men will be imperfect. If a woman needs you to be perfect for her to respect you, good luck with that. It’s not going to end well.
After Peter specifically speaks to husbands and wives in 1 Peter 3:1-7, he then states in 1 Peter 3:8 (NIV), “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.”
So a good woman from the Lord will have high standards for herself. The man she chooses will deserve respect in many ways (Proverbs 31:23). However, she will also grant her man grace when he needs it, knowing that she too will need grace because no one is perfect.
