3 Things God Always Does to a Woman Who Chooses a Worldly Man

Proverbs 19:3

Here are 3 biblical reasons why God warns his daughters to avoid getting attached to a worldly man.

1. If You Choose a Worldly Man, God Will Let You Reap What You Sow

There is a terrifying principle found throughout the Bible about reaping what you sow (Galatians 6:7-9).

Many people imagine God as this vindictive, angry being who is eager to punish everyone who doesn’t obey him. However, Scripture is clear that nothing could be further from the truth (2 Peter 3:9)! Not only does God love us so much that he sent his only Son to pay for the sins we commit (John 3:16), but he also loves us enough not to force us to obey him.

God gives us real choices, and because our choices have real consequences, sometimes he allows us to experience the results of the decisions we insist on making. Romans 1:24 says that God “gave them up” to the sinful desires they had chosen. In other words, sometimes God’s judgment is allowing someone to continue down the path they have repeatedly chosen.

And this principle applies to relationships as well. Perhaps you’ve met a man who isn’t following Christ, but you really like him. He’s charming. He’s attractive. He treats you well. He makes you feel special. Maybe you start thinking, “I know he’s not a Christian, but perhaps I can be the woman who changes him.” But God has already given you his warning about this:

  • 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.”
  • James 4:4, “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’”

A man can be successful, funny, handsome, generous, respectful, and still not be the spiritual leader you need in a Christian marriage. God’s commands are not designed to steal your happiness. They’re designed to protect you from pain (Psalm 119:24).

So when God warns you not to become unequally yoked, he’s not saying, “I’m trying to keep you from having fun.” He’s saying, “My daughter, I know where this road leads.”

Without Christ, a man will either be passive or domineering (Genesis 3:16). Only in Christ can a man lead while being gentle (Colossians 3:19), sacrifice while not abusing your submission (Ephesians 5:22-25), and love you while rightly desiring your respect in a biblical way (Ephesians 5:33).

2. If You Choose a Worldly Man, You Will Realize It’s Better to Be Alone Than with the Wrong Person

A woman may think, “I’m tired of waiting. All the godly men are already taken. The men I actually like aren’t interested in following Christ. Maybe I’m being too picky. Maybe I should just give this guy a chance.”

And at first, it may seem like you’ve finally gotten what you’ve been waiting for. You have someone to text. Someone to go on dates with. Someone who tells you that you’re beautiful. Someone who makes you feel wanted. Someone you can go to the party with instead of showing up alone again.

But eventually, one way or the other, you will discover what Scripture has been telling you all along: It is better to be alone than to be deeply connected to the wrong person.

The only people who think it’s better to have an ungodly person than no one at all are those who haven’t actually tried this theory. Every Christian woman who ignores God’s warning about choosing a worldly man, without fail, always regrets their choice.

  • Proverbs 12:4 says, “An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.”
  • And Proverbs 21:9 says, “It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.”

Remember, Proverbs is a book of principles. So these verses are not just warnings about toxic women. Rather, these principles also teach that it’s better to be alone than with a toxic man.

You may be lonely while you’re single. But there is a worse loneliness you will experience if you’re not careful – the loneliness of feeling abandoned even though you committed to someone in marriage.

Psalm 84:11 says, “No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Trust God’s timing and remain faithful while you wait for his will to be done.

3. If You Choose a Worldly Man, You Will Be at Great Risk of Forever Turning Your Back on God

If you’ve already made the mistake of choosing a worldly man, take heart. We serve a gracious God! Your story is not over. God can redeem you. He will forgive you if you confess and repent (1 John 1:9).

But while that is true, we also need to recognize the serious danger of allowing the wrong relationship to pull us away from Christ. Sadly, what often happens is that our sin leads to pain, and in our pain, if we don’t turn back to God, we become bitter. Many women have rejected God’s counsel, chosen a worldly man, been hurt, but then they blame God for the pain in their life.

Rather than repenting like the prodigal son and returning to the Father in full confession and humility, many women shake their fists at God and never come back. They are the ones described in Proverbs 19:3, “When a man’s folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the Lord.”

Don’t be that woman. Instead, heed the warning of Isaiah 55:6-7:

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”

Our God is the one who said in Joel 2:25, “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten . . .” But to experience God’s favor, you must follow him in faith. He has a good plan for you. Never choose a worldly man.
