1. If Your Motives for Marriage Are Pure, This Is a Strong Sign God Is Saying, “You’re Ready”

Whenever we want to know whether God is giving us the green light on a particular desire, the first place to look is at the Bible. If a desire is clearly unbiblical, obviously God doesn’t want that for you. Marriage, however, is a biblical desire. Scripture clearly states that those who desire marriage desire a good thing (Proverbs 18:22, Proverbs 19:14, Hebrews 13:4).

With that said, Scripture is also clear that we can want a good thing for a bad reason. So the second place to look to know if God is giving you the green light about a desire you have is in the motives of our own hearts (James 4:3). What are some good motives for marriage?

  • If you want to get married to glorify God, this pleases the Lord (1 Corinthians 10:31).
  • If you want to get married to experience a godly partnership, this pleases the Lord (Genesis 2:18).
  • If you want to get married to enjoy loving sex, this pleases the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:1-9).
  • If you want to get married to raise a family in Christ, this pleases the Lord (Malachi 2:15).

What if you want to get married for good reasons, but you also sense some bad motives mixed in too, such as idolatry, status, or lust?

What people often forget about motives of the heart is that we can change them. According to Scripture, we can repent of bad motives and choose good motives (Matthew 6:1-18).

How can you repent and choose the right motives? The short answer is that you first need to know what the right motives are according to the Bible, and then, through prayer, you can invite the Holy Spirit to help you repent of false motives and choose the right ones in your heart for marriage (Psalm 51:10, Psalm 139:23-24).

But this is a big topic, and it’s one that I cover in great detail in my courses called Heart Check and Marriage Material.

2. If Your Life Is Free from Sinful Patterns that Are Destructive to a Relationship, This Is a Sign God Is Saying, “You’re Ready for Marriage”

It’s unbiblical to think that you will ever be perfect enough to deserve something so good as marriage. The truth is, none of us will ever be right enough to be totally worthy of marriage. But through God’s grace, and his grace being offered through each other, we can receive the gift of marriage in humility, allowing the Spirit to help us mature more and more on our journey of sanctification.

However, while it’s true that none of us are ever totally ready for marriage, it’s also true that there are times where someone is not spiritually, emotionally, or practically mature enough to rightly handle this gift. This is usually marked not by sin, but by living in a pattern of sin.

No sin is acceptable. We must never tolerate any darkness in our lives. But when you read passages like 1 John 1:5-10, you see that the Bible distinguishes between “sinning” and “walking in sin”. If you are actively walking in sin, meaning that there is a stronghold in your life that is ruling your everyday patterns, this means you should not get married.

If you are struggling with something like that, however, this doesn’t mean you are years away from being ready for marriage. God’s grace is sufficient. Once you repent and start walking in the light, the Holy Spirit will let you know when you’re ready for marriage, and it’s usually much sooner than we expect.

This is also a big topic that I cover in much greater detail in my courses called Marriage Material and 30 Days of Sanctifying Your Sexuality.

3. If You’re Prepared to Sacrifice for Another Person, This Is a Sign God Is Saying, “You’re Ready for Marriage

Marriage is fun and enjoyable, and it brings a lot of relief from problems like loneliness, sexual tension, and the desire to have a family of your own one day.

But while marriage does bring amazing benefits to your life, surprisingly, the biggest benefit it offers is an incredible opportunity to sacrifice for another person. Getting is great, but according to Acts 20:35, giving is even better.

So if you’re ready to not only receive love, but to give love, which means you’re ready to lay yourself down for the benefit of another person (John 15:13), this means you’re ready for marriage.
