1 Corinthians 7:6-7, 36-38
If you are a Christian single, have you ever wondered to yourself, “Will I be single forever?” While there is certainly know way to know the future God has for us, I do believe there are some common signs in the lives of those who never get married.
Of course not everyone who is unmarried will fall into these three categories, but I offer these three signs as a way of looking at your own patterns so you gain more insight into the paths God may want you to walk – whether that be a life of singleness which can be a gift or a life of marriage which can also be a gift.
If Don’t Want to Be Married, This Is a Sign You Will Never Get Married
The first and most biblical sign that someone will remain unmarried for their whole life is if they do not have a desire for marriage.
When you read through 1 Corinthians 7, for example, the call to a life if a singleness is a high calling from God. However, in that passage Paul makes it clear that those who want to be married should marry. Those who do not have a strong desire for sex or marriage should serve the Lord in singleness. As 1 Corinthians 7:6-7, 36-38 states:
“To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion. . .
If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed, if his passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry—it is no sin. But whoever is firmly established in his heart, being under no necessity but having his desire under control, and has determined this in his heart, to keep her as his betrothed, he will do well. So then he who marries his betrothed does well, and he who refrains from marriage will do even better.”
So one of the clearest signs that you have a calling to live a life of singleness is if you truly want to live this life. If you have a desire to honor God in marriage, you are free to pursue that desire. There’s no guarantee you will get married one day, but if you don’t want to be married that is a guarantee you will stay single.
If You Are Very Stubborn in Your Sin and Combative Towards Others, This Is a Sign You Will Never Get Married
Another common sign in the lives of those who stay single even though they wish they were married are those people who stubbornly cling to their sin and are very combative towards other people. Human relationships, although unique to the two people in that relationship, all have common needs within them.
Everyone needs respect. No one likes to be put down. People want to feel loved. If you are someone who is not able to do these things because you are unwilling to repent of your sin, it is unlikely anyone would want to marry you.
Don’t get me wrong. We all have bad days. We all get into arguments. And we all can be sensitive some days. But if you are extremely argumentative and totally set in your ways which push people away, this is a sign you will never get married.
If You Refuse in an Extreme Way to Interact with the Opposite Sex, This Is a Sign You Will Never Get Married
The one thing that is always needed to form a marriage is a man and a woman. Therefore, one sign that you will never get married is if you refuse to interact with the opposite sex. I’m not talking about being a little shy or getting nervous around someone you like. I’m talking about living a life where you literally never speak to any eligible singles like yourself.
We can’t guarantee anyone’s future, but I can guarantee that you will never get married if you literally never speak with anyone of the opposite sex.
