Here are 5 things that happen when God chooses someone for you.
1. When God Chooses Someone for You, You Will Also Choose This Person for Yourself
There will always be some mystery when we try to understand God’s sovereign will and man’s free will. However, rather than thinking it can only be one or the other, the Bible routinely mentions both working at the same time:
- 2 Samuel 2:25, “But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death.”
- Nehemiah 2:8, “And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.”
- Acts 2:23, “This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.”
Therefore, you don’t need to fear that God has chosen someone that you will not want to choose for yourself. When God chooses someone for you, his choice will manifest through your free choice to also choose this person for yourself.
2. When God Chooses Someone for You, This Person Will Also Choose You for Themselves
The same principles we discussed in point 1 will be applied to this other person when God has chosen them for you.
If this person’s heart is not for you, they have not been chosen by God to be your person. Proverbs 21:1, “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.”
Not only will your desire correspond to God’s choice, but this person’s decisions to be with you will also correspond to God’s choice.
3. When God Chooses Someone for You, Other Relationship Opportunities Will Not Be Blessed in Your Life
God will direct you down the right path by showing you when you are on the wrong path. Closed doors are meant to be arrows pointing you towards the open door God has for you.
In other words, when you try to be in a relationship with someone but the door closes, or if you get into a relationship with someone but it’s not healthy, these are signs God has chosen someone else for you.
Notice how Jesus used this principle to direct his disciples in ministry, “But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you” (Luke 10:10-11). Jesus was showing us that when people reject us, they are not the one’s chosen for us. We are to look elsewhere.
This same principle should be applied to romantic relationship opportunities. You will be led to the person God has chosen for you by moving away from the people who God has clearly not chosen for you.
4. When God Choose Someone for You, You Will Not Immediately Know It
It is actually a bad sign when you think you’ve met your future spouse even though you don’t actually know anything significant about this person. Why? Because this is usually a sign you are hearing what you want to hear because of infatuation and an overly powerful desire to get married.
When God reveals the one to you, it almost always occurs through a wise process rather than through a supernatural vision. And even if God does give you a vision or a dream or a strong word that this person is your future spouse, he will confirm this through real events occurring between you and this person. If the facts don’t line up with your feelings, the facts overrule your feelings.
Deuteronomy 18:22 (NIV), “If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.” Sometimes we need to apply this verse to ourselves. It doesn’t mean you are a false prophet. It just means you got it wrong this time. It’s okay. Just be humble and accept it. Move on and keep following the Lord.
5. When God Chooses Someone for You, You Two Will Become a Couple One Day
As I’ve been alluding to throughout this article, the clearest sign that you will see when God has chosen someone for you is that you two will actually become a couple. You may feel God has chosen someone for you, but you won’t know for sure until you actually get married. When God speaks, his word always comes true. If something doesn’t happen, God didn’t say it. As Isaiah 55:10-11 explains:
For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
