5 Signs You’re Praying About the Right Person

Philippians 4:6-7

Does God want you with that person or does he have someone else for you? Will something happen between you two if you keep waiting, or is the Lord leading you to move on? How will you know if you are praying about the right person?

Here are 5 signs you are praying about the right person.

1. If You Have Questions About This Person, It’s Right for You to Be Praying About Them

As you will see in the later points, there does come a time where it could be wrong to keep praying about someone that God has clearly told you to stop praying about. But in the early stages of confusion, you should feel totally free to come into the presence of God with all the questions you have about this person.

Be specific in your prayers. If you want to know if someone is a Christian, ask the Lord to show you this in a very clear way. If you want to know if this person is romantically interested in you like you are in them, ask for that exact information to be revealed. If you’re simply unsure how you feel about this person but you also think there could be potential between you two, ask the Lord directly for the clarity only he can provide.

Obey what James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

2. If You Need More Information About This Person, It’s Right for You to Pray About Them

Once you ask for information and God provides it, there is a temptation to deny what you’ve receive if it did not provide you with the answer you wanted.

For example, if you asked the Lord to show you if someone was a true Christian or not, but then God showed you a bunch of the works of the flesh in this person’s life (Galatians 5:19-21), it could be tempting to keep asking God to show you the fruits of the Spirit in this person’s life. Because you want them to be a Christian so bad, you may be ignoring the clear answer the Lord has already given you. To keep praying for something like this could lead you to miss God’s leading because he’s clearly pointing in a different direction.

However, sometimes you just have not had the real-life experiences to find answers to the questions you still have. So rather than praying for God to answer your questions during your prayer time, it could be more beneficial to ask God to provide you with the opportunities to get your questions answered in real life.

In other words, prayer should usually lead to action. Just praying is not enough. We must pray in faith, but we must also walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). James 2:17 explains, “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

3. If There Is a Growing Interest Between You Two, It’s Right for You to Pray About This Person

One way you will know you are not praying about the right person is when nothing is happening for a long time. Patience is good. But there is a big difference between patience and passivity. Patience waits for the right time to act. Passivity just waits and waits because it makes you feel like there is never a good time to act.

Therefore, if you have been praying about someone for months or years but there is still no progression forward, this is strong evidence you are praying about the wrong person. However, if you have been praying about someone and now there has been slow but steady progression forward as you two are growing your connection together, this is a good sign you are praying about the right person.

God cuts away everything in our life that is not causing godly progression so that we might use our energy to grow effectively. As John 15:1-2 states, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

4. If Your Past Prayers Are Starting to Come True, It’s Right to Keep Praying About This Person

Another way you will know you are on the right track is when there is fruit to the prayers you’ve already prayed. When God is in something, it’s always fruitful. When there is not good fruit being produced, you can be sure God is not in it.

Therefore, if you’ve asked for opportunities to see this person’s godly character, to build a connection, to gain more clarity, and these prayers are being answered, this is a great sign you should keep asking for more things regarding this person.

When your actions are blessed, this is a sign you are doing God’s word. James 1:25 explains, “But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”

5. If You Sense It Is God’s Will for You Both to Be Together, It’s Right for You to Be Praying About This Person

God will never answer a prayer with a yes if that yes would go against his will. In other words, God wants us to pray about the things God wants for us. Prayer is less about changing God’s will to our will and more about God changing our will to conform to his will. Prayer doesn’t change God. It changes the person who is praying.

As 1 John 5:14 states, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.”

So if you see practical and biblical evidence that it could be God’s will for you and this person to be together, this is also great evidence you are praying about the right person.
