3 Signs God Is Saying, “Don’t Give Up”

Hebrews 12:7-11

Here are 3 signs that often mean God is saying, “Don’t give up.”

I also wanted to quickly let you know that there are only a few hours left to enroll in AGW University. 1. If You Are Struggling to Believe God Can Turn Your Burden Into a Blessing, God Is Saying, “Don’t Give Up”

Would you be grateful for fleas? In Corrie Ten Boom’s book called the Hiding Place, she recounts the story of her time in a Nazi concentration camp with her sister, Betsie. They were imprisoned for helping hide Jews. And if that was not bad enough, when they were assigned their barracks at the concentration camp, they were put into the one that had the worst outbreak of fleas in the whole camp. When Betsie thanked God for the fleas, Corrie was disgusted and confused.

Little did Corrie know, however, that it was actually because of these fleas that the guards did not visit their barrack very often. And because of this, Corrie and Betsie were able to lead secret Bible studies with the women they were living with. This became a vitally important source of comfort for these women, and none of it would have been possible without the fleas.

Most of us are like Corrie in those moments when our bad situations just seem to get worse and worse. But God wants us to have faith like Betsie did during that trial. She thanked God for the fleas before she even knew how God would use them for their good.

We don’t know how God will turn the bad to good, the curse into a blessing, and the dead into life – but we know he can if we remain faithful (Genesis 50:20, Deuteronomy 23:5, John 11:44)!

No matter what is happening, stay faithful, God is saying, “Don’t give up.”

2. If You Have Regret About Wasted Time, God Is Saying, “Don’t Give Up”

When it comes to relationships, many have said, “I wish I would have started younger. There seems to be no one left for me.” When it comes to careers, people say, “I’m too old to go back to school. I’m stuck in this dead-end position.” And when it comes to spiritual maturity, people lament, “I wish I would have come to Christ when I was young. I barely have anytime left to serve the Lord.”

While there certainly is some truth to statements like these, these statements are also missing the biblical truth that God can always do more with our little than we can do with our much. As Joel 2:25 states, “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten . . .”

Was not this the point of Jesus parable in Matthew 20:1-16? There was a landowner who hired people in the beginning of the day, then hired people in the middle of day, and then hired people at the end of the day. But when it was time to pay everyone, he gave all the workers the same amount. This upset those who worked longer, but the landowner said, “I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last,” (Matthew 20:14-16).

If you have regret about wasting time, remember, the good God has for you is not because you earned it. He will give you what he wants to give you because he wants to. It’s all by grace.

3. If You Are Being Put Through the Refining Fires, God Is Saying, “Don’t Give Up”

I recently read a story about a woman who was studying Malachi 3:3, “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver . . .” Wanting to know more about the process of purifying silver, she went to see a silversmith:

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that, in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest so as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot – then she thought again about the verse, that He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. For if the silver was left even a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, ‘How do you know when the silver is fully refined?’  He smiled at her and answered, ‘Oh, that’s the easy part — when I see my image reflected in it.’” (Author, Unknown)

God’s refining furnace is hot, but he knows how to use it just enough to transform us into his image and not destroy us. As Hebrews 12:7-11 (NIV) states:

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? . . . God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

If you are being refined into the image of God, don’t give up!
